Why does my exterior door keep sticking or letting in drafts?

Sticking and drafts often point to a worn door, a shifted frame, or gaps around the opening. A site assessment separates a door problem from a rough opening or trim problem. The findings guide repair or replacement, so the work addresses the cause instead of only the visible gap.

Exterior Door Replacement in Covington: Scope and Decisions

Exterior door replacement focuses on the full doorway, not only the moving slab. We check the door measurement, frame removal needs, rough opening, sill, trim, threshold, and hardware before the work plan is set.

The key decision is whether the existing frame can support the new door. A replacement may involve the door unit, jambs, threshold, weather seals, and finish work. If the opening has deeper structural damage, moisture damage, or a layout problem, broader carpentry may be the better fit.

This page serves buyers who want one organized plan for a planned door project. Our design-build process connects planning and construction, so homeowners and businesses can review the scope before work begins.

  • Confirm the door opening size and swing direction before ordering.
  • Check the frame, sill, threshold, trim, and rough opening.
  • Match hardware placement to the existing entry layout.
  • Include removal, installation, sealing, and finish work in the quote.

Service Overview

Exterior door replacement is a construction service that removes an old entry door and fits a new door into the existing opening.

  • Replacement includes the door unit, frame condition, opening checks, seals, trim, and hardware, while a slab swap changes fewer parts.
  • We provide this work for homes and businesses in Covington and the surrounding area.

What a New Exterior Door Changes

A properly measured door fits the opening and supports smoother daily use.

A prepared sill and sealed opening help limit drafts and water entry.

New hardware can match the door swing, entry layout, and everyday use.

One organized scope gives homeowners and businesses a clearer construction decision.

Businesses can plan the work around their existing layout and operating needs.

Why Use a Design-Build Team for This Door Work

Start with the opening, not the catalog

The existing opening decides much of the work. We check the frame, sill, trim, and rough opening before selecting a replacement path. Exterior door replacement is the wrong job when the main issue is a larger wall, layout, or structural change.

Keep the scope in one plan

Door removal, opening preparation, flashing, hardware, and finish work belong in the same project discussion. Our design-build approach keeps those decisions connected from planning through construction.

Best remodel experience we have ever had. The oversight, careful workmanship and ownership of the project was above expectations. Our design team was amazing. We also had the same person do all the work start to finish and was a total Pro. Could not recommend enough and will be doing any and all projects through them. This place is a gem.

Leaving a long overdue review. Linda helped us remodel our bathroom and kitchen last year. We also did some flooring improvements, and some electrical and plumbing work along the way. The pricing was very reasonable, and we appreciated that Linda was always conscious of our budget, when we made adjustments to our plan. The work was delivered very quickly on promised timelines. She had some really good suggestions around the choice of flooring, which we are thankful for (especially looking back after a year). Also appreciate her sense of style.. it helped us make the right choices for countertops, tiles and fixtures. It all looks great, our guests often comment on how beautiful our kitchen looks. Thank you!

Overall I enjoyed working with Linda and her team. Even though there were no major redesign of spaces and I knew exactly what tile/fixtures/cabinets etc I wanted I still was appreciative of her insight on certain details and choices. It was very easy to collaborate with her. She makes an effort to be in-tune with a client. She was very responsive and took care of everything that needed attention as soon as she was able too. She made sure that I was listened to and taken care of as a client with her subcontractors. I would work with her again.

Questions About Replacing an Exterior Door

What is included in an exterior door replacement?

Flashing installation is included when the replacement scope requires work around the door opening. The full scope can include:

  • Door and opening measurement
  • Frame removal and rough opening checks
  • Door unit and frame installation
  • Weather seals, threshold, and trim
  • Hardware fitting and operation checks

We explain which items belong in the quote before scheduling.

How do you know if the frame must come out too?

Frame removal is needed when the jambs, sill, or threshold cannot support the selected door unit. Visible rot, movement, poor fit, or damaged fastener points can affect that decision. The inspection also checks the rough opening behind the frame. A slab-only change may fit when the existing frame remains sound and compatible.

Which door details should I confirm before agreeing to the work?

The door swing, opening size, threshold, hardware, finish, and frame scope should be confirmed before work begins. Those details affect fit and daily use. The quote should also state whether removal, trim work, sealing, and finish tasks are included. Written scope helps prevent a door order from missing a key site condition.

When does the opening change the replacement plan?

The opening changes the plan when its size, level, frame, sill, or surrounding materials do not suit the replacement unit. The door measurement alone cannot answer that question. We inspect the rough opening and surrounding trim, then explain whether preparation, carpentry, or a different door configuration is needed.

Why can a new door still draft after installation?

A new door can draft when the frame, threshold, seals, or rough opening leaves an unclosed gap. The door slab may be sound while the surrounding assembly needs correction. We check the latch side, hinge side, sill, threshold, and seals during the work. The quote should identify any opening repairs that affect the final fit.

What changes the price on this door project?

The selected door, frame condition, rough opening, hardware, trim, access, and finish work change the project price. A slab replacement has a narrower scope than full frame removal and opening preparation. A consultation lets us review those conditions and prepare a quote tied to the actual property.
